Lead Platform Engineer

JouwWeb is looking for a Lead Platform Engineer 

Are you the expert in building simple, scalable, and reliable infrastructures? Do you want to shape the technical backbone of Webador so we can effortlessly quadruple our customer base? Then we're looking for you!

Your Role

As a Senior Infrastructure Specialist, you are the technical expert who ensures our systems can effortlessly handle Webador's rapid growth. Your primary mission is to design and manage our infrastructure so that we can grow 2x, 3x, or even 4x in size without our systems faltering. You are responsible for the stability, speed, manageability, and security of services for our 270,000 customers and for realizing our international ambitions.

You'll start in the product team, where there's already one infrastructure colleague. You will take the lead and ensure this eventually grows into a larger team. You'll work closely with our CTO. You'll have the autonomy to implement technical solutions that are effective and scalable. You'll be guided by our core philosophy: we love simplicity, both in our solutions and our processes. We don't complicate things unnecessarily and avoid superfluous meetings and bureaucracy.

Your Responsibilities

• Architecture: You are responsible for ensuring our infrastructure scales with our rapidly growing user base. You make sure our systems are ready to smoothly handle a doubling of traffic and customers within two years.

• Management & Reliability: You take the lead in managing and optimizing our Google Cloud infrastructure. You are ultimately responsible for uptime and continuously improve our processes for backups, disaster recovery, and CI/CD.

• Cost Management: You keep infrastructure costs per customer low and ensure our cloud spend is used efficiently.

• Security: You ensure we are secure and prepared for all sorts of scenarios.

Who We're Looking For

• You have a deep-seated preference for simplicity, both in technology and methodology. You always ask yourself, "Can this be simpler?" and consciously choose the most robust, maintainable solution instead of the most complex. Our choice (for now) not to use Kubernetes is a direct result of this; we use technology that works for us, not the other way around.

• You are an experienced, hands-on specialist who enjoys solving complex problems.

• You have a strong background in programming. In-depth knowledge of PHP is not a requirement; we believe a good programmer learns the language quickly enough.

• You have a passion for Linux, virtualization, and building reliable systems.

• You are willing to step in when "shit hits the fan." There's no on-call duty yet, and the best-case effort is from colleagues (but perhaps you'll introduce this?).

• You naturally take ownership and can lead independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

• Cloud & Hosting: GCP, Docker Swarm, HAProxy, Terraform, Ansible, Kamal

• Application & Database: PHP, MySQL (Managed Google Cloud SQL), Redis (Managed Google Memory Store)

• CI/CD & Monitoring: CircleCI, DataDog, BetterStack

• Mail & CDN: Dovecot, Postfix, RSpamd, Fastly

What we’re looking for

• You have a Bachelor's degree (HBO) or equivalent professional and intellectual ability.

• You are passionate about technology and smart solutions.

• You have 5+ years of work experience in a similar role.

• You are independent, proactive, and structured.

• You are proficient in the English language (both written and spoken).

• You are available for 32 - 40 hours per week.
